Xe Dang people in Quang Nam province live mainly in the highland communes of Nam Tra My district, famous for the weaving (brocade weaving). However, traditional weaving is fading, because most of Xe Dang young women are not professionally taught. Nam Tra My district is planning to restore the traditional weaving to preserve the craft village culture of Xe Dang ethnic people.
To restore traditional weaving, the district has invited 10 good craftsmen to teach students. Xe Dang traditional weaving vocational training program has been implemented by Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province in Tra Nam and Tra Linh communes from 2006 to present, with 35 sets of looms, attracting more than 40 women. Local women come to the trade. The program has attracted a lot of women to participate in vocational training, including young people.

Since the district restored and developed the traditional weaving of their people, artisan Ho Thi Kim Thien, in hamlet 1, Tra Linh commune, Nam Tra My district is very happy. Right from an early age, Ms. Thien was trained by her mother to become familiar with kaivai (ie, loom), practice making karao, karuong, and kaxa (big and small shuttles) and then learning to spin, color, and sketch. motifs to weave looms, scarves, loincloths, skirts ... During leisure time, or when the rainy and windy days are not available, 15 women from the village's weaving team come to Ms. Thien's house to work more. . On average, each work weaves 25,000-30,000 VND, but everyone is happy that their traditional job is restored and developed. Ms. Ho Thi Kim Thien said: “Now that the Party and the State invest, 15 women in the village know how to weave. Later, they will pass the job on to their children and grandchildren. ”

The program to restore weaving craft of Xe Dang ethnic people has been invested 120 million VND by Nam Tra My district every year. In addition to the scattered weaving looms in the people, the district restored 15 weaving teams in Tra Linh and Tra Nam communes. Each group was supported 40 million VND to buy looms, materials and organize vocational training for women. Weaving is a long-standing traditional profession that preserves the unique cultural values of Xe Dang people and creates jobs and increases income for families. Restoring and expanding weaving villages is a district policy and a common aspiration of the people.

The products which are focused on restoring and transmitting vocational skills to students are mainly plaids, skirts, loincloths, brocade and many kinds of scarves. On average, each product takes from 3 to 4 days to weave because the process of weaving the texture pattern is time-consuming. Especially for the boards, the pattern must be identical to the patterns painted on trees mentioned in Xe Dang's buffalo-stabbing festivals. Products made from woven and brocade will be sewn into traditional costumes for boarding pupils of ethnic minority boarding schools. The district also assigns gong teams to design them into costumes for festivals to promote the cultural beauty of Xe Dang people, and to promote other localities in the performance of gongs.

Mr. Ho Van Dieu, a resident of Top 1 commune, Tra Linh commune, Nam Tra My district excitedly said: The whole people of Tra Linh commune were very excited, especially the top of this village because they have recovered their profession. I find brocade is very beautiful, promoting the traditional cultural identity of the people in Nam Tra My ”.

Xe Dang people in Nam Tra My, Quang Nam are excited with the development of traditional villages of their people, but the current difficulty is still the source of raw materials and output for the product. The locally grown cotton is a good material, when dyed with good color, the product sells at a high price but with low productivity, the price of the product is quite high compared to the people's pocket money in the district.

To solve the material shortage, Nam Tra My district implemented a pilot project of high-yielding cotton varieties to transfer technology to people planting on a large scale. Regarding the output of the product, from the 2007-2008 school year onwards, the People's Committee of Nam Tra My district decided to provide funding to support 20 primary and secondary schools to make brocade uniforms for more than 6,000 students in localities. in the district.

Mr. Phan Thanh Tien, Head of Industry and Trade Department of Nam Tra My District, Quang Nam Province, said: The province has provided financial support, the district has directed the Department to organize the development of this profession for women from 18 to 30 years old. The purpose of the job restoration is to let women know the traditional job, keep the order of the mountainous people.

Weaving villages at the foot of Ngoc Linh mountain will revive and develop sustainably when the cooperative economic team model is implemented. The introduction of textile products and traditional costumes of Xe Dang people in Hoi An, Tam Ky, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City ... is also being coordinated with the local authorities and development partners. declaration, is an opportunity to preserve and promote cultural values, economic development and tourism in the mountainous areas of Quang Nam.
